Guidelines

M.A. Programs

M. A. Programs are available in Slavic Languages and Literatures (SLL), Contemporary Russian Studies (CRS). In addition, a one-year "4 +1 M.A." is available for Slavic & Russian and East European Studies (REES) majors at UVA. The following guidelines pertain to the M.A. programs in Slavic Languages and Literatures and Contemporary Russian Studies:

  • The M.A. is usually completed in two years (four semesters)
  • The Russian proficiency examination should be taken by the end of the third semester of graduate study
  • Students in the Slavic Languages & Literatures program normally take the comprehensive examination by the end of the fourth semester of graduate study
  • The thesis (for M.A. students in Contemporary Russian Studies) should be completed and defended by April 30

Permission to Proceed to the Ph.D. Program

Students who have completed all requirements for the Slavic Languages and Literatures M.A. and who want to continue on to the Ph.D. program must request permission to proceed. The following materials should be submitted to the Director of Graduate Studies:

  • A copy of the M.A. thesis or a substantial research paper
  • A letter explaining the student’s research interests and professional goals
  • Academic transcript
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member

To these materials the Director of Graduate Studies will add the M.A. comprehensive examination.

Ph.D. Program

The following guidelines pertain to the Ph.D. program in Slavic Languages and Literatures:

  • All course work for the Ph.D. should be completed by the end of the first year of post-M.A. study
  • The non-Slavic language requirement should be completed before the beginning of the sixth semester of the program
  • The doctoral dissertation should be largely drafted by the end of the student's fifth year of study.
