The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures provides instruction in the languages, literatures and cultures of Russia and Eastern Europe. An understanding of this part of the world is crucial in today’s global culture.
Majors
The Department offers two majors: Russian Language and Literature (RLL) is a departmental major; Russian and East European Studies (REES) is an interdisciplinary major. Both majors provide knowledge of Russian culture. The interdisciplinary major also provides knowledge of other Slavic and East European cultures depending on course selection.
Second Major
Students majoring in Russian Language and Literature or Russian and East European Studies often have a second major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Study of the languages, literatures and cultures of Russia and Eastern Europe is complemented by study of Politics, History, Art History, Comparative Literature and other major disciplines.
Careers
Students who major in the Department develop skills and knowledge that serve them well in graduate and professional study. They are competitive in both the private and public sectors, finding employment in government, NGOs, education, business, media and the arts.
Faculty
Undergraduates who major in the Department have the opportunity for close interaction with the faculty. Many courses are small and faculty are accessible to students.
Transfer Credit
University students wishing to take courses in Slavic Languages and Literatures at other universities, domestic or foreign, should consult the Undergraduate Advisor regarding the transfer of credit. Generally, tentative approval for the transfer will be given prior to the period of study only upon presentation by the student of adequate documentation that each course in question meets the standard of the University. Final approval for transfer will be given upon return of the student, who should be prepared to submit relevant syllabi, assignments, examinations, and papers in support of the petition for credit transfer. Students wishing to transfer language credits should be prepared to demonstrate, in both written and spoken form, the communicative competence they have gained. Pertzoff Prize
Each year at graduation, the Department, in conjunction with the Center for Russian and East European Studies, awards the Pertzoff Prize to the 4th year student who has achieved the highest level of excellence in Russian and East European Studies. The award is in memory of Vladimir A. Pertzoff, Professor of Russian History.
