Research Interests

Nationally recognized public humanities scholar and innovator in university teaching; creator and developer of the “Books Behind Bars” program, in which university students lead discussions about classical literature with inmates at a juvenile correctional center in Virginia; author of Give War and Peace a Chance: Tolstoyan Wisdom for Troubled Times (Simon & Schuster, 2014; paperback, 2015) and Understanding Tolstoy (Ohio State University Press, 2011; paperback 2015).
