Ph.D. Written Comprehensive Examination Format

FIRST DAY (3 hours)

2.5 hours writing time. 30 additional minutes are available before you begin writing to choose questions and plan and organize answers. You can also use part of the 30 minutes to check answers at the end. Do not write more than 150 minutes.

Old Russian and 18th-Century Literature

  • Identify and comment briefly on 10 of the following items (25 minutes) [15 items]
  • Two short-essay questions on specific trends or major works (25 minutes each) [4 choices: 2 medieval, 2 18th century]

Modern Russian Literature

  • A single broad survey question in Russian literature from roughly 1800 to the present on some theme, genre, trend, style, etc., asking for discussion of multiple texts (75 minutes) [2 choices]


SECOND DAY (3 hours)

2.5 hours writing time. 30 additional minutes are available before you begin writing to choose questions and plan and organize answers. You can also use part of the 30 minutes to check answers at the end. Do not write more than 150 minutes. Questions average 37.5 minutes each.

Modern Russian Literature

  • Movements and Genres. 1 short-essay question on movements and genres in Russian literature from roughly 1800 to the present (35-40 minutes) [2 choices]
  • Poetry. 1 short-essay question on individual poets, poetic styles, or major poems (35-40 minutes) [2 choices]
  • Prose and Drama. 2 short-essay questions on prose or drama (35-40 minutes each) [4 choices]


THIRD DAY (90 minutes)

75 minutes writing time. 15 additional minutes are available before you begin writing to choose questions and plan and organize answers. You can also use part of the 15 minutes to check answers at the end. Do not write more than 75 minutes.
